This coming November, Chicago will become the largest city in the nation to host a Bioneers gathering! Our three-day event will bring together international, national and local innovators and visionaries to tackle some of today’s most pressing social and environmental problems with solutions that work with – rather than against – the web of life.
Famed scientist, philosopher, feminist, environmentalist, author and activist Dr. Vandana Shiva and eco-preneur John Edel, creator of The Plant, Chicago’s vertical farm and business incubator, will give live keynotes.

What is a Bioneer?
Bioneers is a national movement that recognizes the interconnectedness of all living things. It brings together innovators and visionaries who inspire a shift in ways that we live on earth through solutions that honor the web of life, each other and future generations. Bionners (biological + pioneers) believe that if humans follow nature’s organizing principles of kinship, cooperation, diversity, symbiosis and continuous cycles of creation (without waste) we CAN solve our most pressing environmental and social challenges without harming our planet AND foster equitable, just and democratic societies. What is Great Lakes Bioneers?
Great Lakes Bioneers Chicago (GLBC) is local, self-organized affiliate partner of the National Bioneers movement. Our inaugural theme is The Living City, using the body as a metaphor for the critical systems that are needed to keep Chicago alive, healthy and thriving. At our gathering we’ll:
- Explore solutions to some of the Chicago’s environmental and social challenges through interactive workshops, panels and skill shares; the arts (including performing arts); and tours of some of the city’s most forward-thinking projects of environmental sustainability and eco-justice.
- Feature Chicago’s innovators and visionaries who can help us collaborate towards building a stronger Chicago by creating systems that are healthy and resilient; close resource loops to minimize waste and extraction; and provide pathways for jobs creation and self-sufficiency. More …
